RAAF Escape & Evasion Silk map, Halmahera and New Guinea.

RAAF Headquarters, Ca. 1943. World War II cloth map, part of an escape kit issued to Australian pilots working to block Japanese radar in the area. Titled 'HALMAHERA', and showing Halmahera (Indonesia) and Dutch (West) New Guinea, with 3 insets.

Halmahera was of interest to the RAAF due to the Japanese naval base at Kao Bay. Either pilots or parachute jumpers dropped in the area could use the map if lost behind enemy lines; the maps provide information on rivers, mountain ranges, elevations, and roads.

Printed on one side, in black plus one color. 32 x 23". Original folds. Trove 11819372 records a copy at State Library Queensland. Very good condition. Item #24645
