Item #24670 Anti immigrant New Orleans newspaper: 'Native American Repealer'. Vol I, No. 2. E. W. Telfair, publisher.

Anti immigrant New Orleans newspaper: 'Native American Repealer'. Vol I, No. 2.

New Orleans, LA: June 15, 1841. Unrecorded anti immigration Louisiana newspaper advocating the repeal of the Naturalization Law of 1802, which had drastically reduced the length of the residency requirement necessary before applying for US citizenship.

The editor states the newspaper's repeal mission in its prospectus at page one and defends its right to publish free from intimidation: "The necessity of an independent organ, and one which cannot be biassed (sic) or intimidated by partizan (sic) terrors, must be obvious to all who desire a repeal of the Naturalization Laws ... "

It goes on to decry the effects of immigration in the US: "already are the pernicious effects of foreign influence beginning to be developed, in the deterioration of morals... already has foreign influence acquired an overshadowing dominancy in our country. It has silenced the press ...".

Page two with a critique of an address by President Tyler, in which Tyler advocates "the rapid augmentation of [the US] population" and concludes with a prediction that the US population could surpass "one thousand millions of human beings" before the close of the next century if current immigration rates held steady.

Folio, 14 1/2 x 20 1/2" folded. Period fold flattened, some ruffling to top edge, very faint offsetting at some places not affecting text. Not recorded in WorldCat, or the American Antiquarian Society holdings. Very good overall. Item #24670
