Item #24671 Port Bathy and the Capital of Ithaca, from Views in Greece. Aquatint. Greece, Edward Dodwell.

Port Bathy and the Capital of Ithaca, from Views in Greece. Aquatint.

London: Rodwell and Martin, 1821. Magnificent original hand colored aquatint, a panoramic view of the Greek island of Ithaca and its port, from one of the most impressive travel books of its time.

These plates were meant as illustrations for Dodwell's 'Classical and Topographical Tour through Greece...' of 1819, but the work proved to be so expensive that Dodwell selected 30 of the best views and published them in 1821 in 'Views in Greece'.

In this view of Ithaca a group of 3 in traditional Greek costume stands in the foreground, with a winding path leading down to the port and harbor.

18 x 11" with wide margins. Some markings outside the image at the left side. OCLC: 3583021. Abbey Travel 130; Blackmer 493; Brunet II:788; Colas 876; Tooley 182. Good condition. Item #24671
