China: 2 Underwood & Underwood Stereoscopic views of Battle of Tientsin.

New York: 1901. Two beautifully preserved sepia cards of China in the Boxer Rebellion, the first showing Indian troops bombarding the Chinese with English artillery, and the second the effects of the bombardment and fire, with buildings obliterated on either side of the main road.

The first card entitled, "Seiks (sic) bombarding Chinese position with 12 lb English Naval Gun -- Arsenal in distance already taken-- Battle of Tientsin, China. The second entitled, "Old Tientsin, showing terrible destruction caused by bombardment and fire, China".

James Ricalton (1844 - 1929) was an American teacher turned photographer, who became a noted war correspondent and photographer recording the Spanish American War, the Russo Japanese War and the Boxer Rebellion. Ricalton won many photography awards, sold images to the American Museum of Natural History, and created images used by Underwood & Underwood. Images on pale pink card stock. Very good condition.
