The Knights of Momus, founded in 1871, was a spinoff of a New Orleans social club devoted to literary studies; the club chose Momus, the god of mockery and raillery and son of the goddess of Night as their ruler. The first pageant took place New Year's Eve 1872 and began with a parade consisting of four floats with horsemen, knights, and maskers, followed by a ball with four tableaux, and held at the Opera House. Its theme was 'The Missing Links'. The second pageant's theme was 'The Coming Races', and it was more devoted to silliness than to satire. The club retired around WWII, until another group rekindled the club in the mid-80s. Good + overall. Item #24763
