'Cataract of the Ganges...'. Theatre, Wolverhampton, February 16, 1824. Playbill.

Wolverhampton: 1824. A handsome large playbill advertising a performance of 'Cataract of the Ganges; Or, the Rajah's Daughter', a play by William Thomas Moncrieff, which was a hit not just in Britain but in the 1824 New York theater season.

This India themed play worked on the contemporary fascination of the viewing public with the exotic, with the desire to enjoy a "spectacle", with elements such as battle fields by moonlight, a pavilion of pleasures, distant views of mountains, temples & cataracts; and princesses "borne in a splendid Palanquin".

During this period of the British Raj, India is also portrayed to audiences as a land in need of British control and management: a place of battles and intrigue, with Muslims pitted against Hindus which only the brave and moral British can restore to order.

7 x 17 1/2", printed in a variety of bold type fonts. Bright and clean. Not located in WorldCat. Very good condition. Item #24773
