The publisher is Nicholas Martianoff (1893 - 1984) a Russian officer who escaped to the US after his arrest in a plot to kill Lenin in the early 1920s. He became a publisher of Russian language books and the business manager of the New York newspaper 'Novoye Russkoye Slovo'. He was born in Siberia and served as an officer in the Russian Imperial Army, before becoming a New York publisher of books in Russian for immigrants.

Tall 4to, 394pp, b&w illlustrations. Gray gilt cloth, rubbed base of spine. Very good condition. Item #24851
