The extensive narrative begins with the history and demographics of New Zealand through 1901. This is followed by images from photographs, both in-text and full page throughout. Subject matter begins with the indigenous Maori and then moves to the Kauri gum industry. Subsequent content includes the history of the Kauri Gum industry (with images of scraping and weighing of the gum and nearby geysers) Tapping for Kauri Gum, Area of the Fields, the Trade in Gum, Getting the Gum (images of men in deep trenches captioned "Draining a large Kauri Gum swamp," etc.) and finally Grading of Gum. Numerous images of both the processing of gum and scenes from New Zealand. 7.75x10", 38 unnumbered pages, maroon paper wrapper, string binding. Cover wrapper partially split at spine, chipped at lower edge, and sunned. A. Klipstein & Co were an American chemical concern established in 1872. It was merged into American Cyanamid Company in 1930. The Smithsonian Institute holds a trade catalogue for the company ca. 1900 which advertises chemicals and chemical products, pharmaceuticals and patent medicines & textiles and textile machinery. The gum was used in the manufacture of oil varnishes and linoleum, as well as jewelry. The peak in the gum market was 1899, with 11,116 tons exported that year, with a value of £600,000. Item #25009
