c. 1875. A photograph of the USS Franklin, a screw frigate, in a Portuguese port with flag flying. Fishing boat in the foreground and houses in the background. The USS Franklin was built in 1854 with partial materials salvaged from the previous USS Franklin and launched in 1864 in Maine.
Franklin's first captain was Admiral David Glasgow Farragut (Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!). In 1874 Franklin was the flagship in the European Squandron, and visited Lisbon, Portugal likely where this photograph was taken. The Franklin operated until decommissioned in 1915.
