"New Caledonia" & "Fiji". Albumen photographs.
1880. Two large impressive photographs laid down on a thick album page, and captioned in a period hand, in ink below the image.
The first, titled "New Caladonia" (sic) shows a panoramic view of a port settlement on a peninsula, possibly Noumea or a nearby mining town. The French established a settlement in New Caledonia in 1854, and mining towns for local nickel and gold. 10 3/4 x 8 1/4". Slightly sunned along right edge, small chip top edge.
On the verso, a dramatic waterfall with very tall coconut trees, a man standing in the foreground, captioned "Fiji". 8 1/2 x 10 1/2". The album sheet, 11 3/4 x 9 1/4", evenly browned, chipped at corners. Good + condition. Item #25102
