Ca. 1820. An New England hand written recipe book for dyes. Recipes begin "For 1 Doz. .... " and there follows a recipe for every color in the rainbow. For 1 Doz Orange, it states "Grind 1/2 lb Spanish arnetta in a morter (sic) then boile (sic) it in 3/4 lb. of white ashes when boils lade (sic) it into a clean tub and let it stand an hour put your yarn in it for 1/2 hour turning it well over then ring (sic) it out. That liquer (sic) will do for 1 Doz of Nankeen. For better then fresh liquer After the Nankeen that will do for a Doz of Straw you may run the Straw through 1/2 of oil of vitriol and water if you please." Other colors include saummon (sic), pink, green dk brown, dogwood blue, pink, red, mock pink, purple, mulberry, crimson, lemon yellow, gold, etc. Additives include oil of vitriol, potash, white ashes, seaflower, dogwood, old fustick, blue vitriole, turmeric, sugar of lead, spirit of salts, "shumack", allum, logwood, peach, aquafortes spirits, lime, etc. The process is exactly delineated for each color, length of soaking, additives and such. 19 pages recipes, 50pp blank, and at the end, 4pp very specific instructions and weights for thread. The only indication of ownership is a page titled "Walkers & Marshall Statement of thread" with a table of skeins & thread, numbers thereof and lengths. Another table titled "Grey Thread. A reel of thread 600 skeans (sic) 9 Treads per Skean of 60 Inch Reel equal to 60 heas (?) of yarn", the table with weights, twists per inch in the yarn and twists per inch in the thread. 5 x 7 1/2", approximately 74pp, with slightly large plain paper wrapper. Old simple tan wrapper, sewn, some staining on wrapper and last blank page. Written in two or three different hands. The date of ca 1820 is based on the hand writing. The item was found in New England, hence the New England attribution. Item #25490
