Washington DC: Government Printing Office, 1896. Hardcover. An Army manual of use during the Spanish American War, a complete guide to preparing food in both the garrison and the field. It includes 44 pages of recipes, quite a few under the heading "Spanish Recipes" (estufado, salza (sic), frijoles, tamales, tortillas, chile con carne).

Information is provided on how to cook in the field (with diagrams and printed b&w photographs), including how to build fires and how to use portable ovens, particularly the Buzzacott Oven, an American adaptation from a Dutch design which could be taken apart and loaded on to the back of a mule (p216).

Printed notice inside the front cover states, "This volume, prepared under the supervision of the Commissary General of Subsistence, U. S. Army, and published by the War Department, is the property of the United States, and by direction of the Secretary of War, is deposited with "Mrs. G. D. Hand" (written in pencil) for official use." The notice references Section 74 of the act of Congress approved on January 12, 1895.
