Boston and Chicago: Redpath Lyceum Bureau, 1878 - 1879. Wraps. Uncommon compilation of the lecturers and topics (many accompanied by fine lithographic portraits by Armstrong & Co. Boston) presented in the 1878 - 1879 season of lectures promoted by the Boston Lyceum Bureau. This compilation includes a lecture on gold and Yosemite (the national park just founded in 1872), presented by William I. Marshall (one of Yellowstone's earliest tour guides), with a full page illustration with 5 vignettes depicting panning out, rocking, the hydraulic pipe washing down the mountains, sluicing, and the arastra. (p42).

Others profiled here include literary speakers, readers, musicians (A. R. Carrington, the "Champion Drum soloist of the World", with full page plate of 5 vignettes showing Carrington playing the drums & tossing drumsticks, p 29) and actors & actresses, including Helen Potter, the enormously popular career impersonator who "represented" (imitated) famous women and men, including suffrage activists Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton (p 47).

The Lyceum was a commercial lecture bureau founded in Boston in 1868 by James Redpath to promote lecturers, authors & performers to an American audience.

Tall 4to, 66pp, full page portraits throughout. Staple bound, apparently missing the original wrappers, publication starts with the verso of a lithographic portrait.
