G. C. Verplanck ALS letter to NY Comptroller Silas Wright about tax bill on land in the Hardenburgh Patent belonging to Verplanck Sr.

October 30, 1831. A manuscript letter requesting information about taxes on the Verplanck land within the Hardenburgh Patent, addressed to Hon. Silas Wright Jr., Comptroller, Albany, NY.

Dear Sir
I obtained last spring from your office the bill for my father's taxes on land in the Hardenburgh patent, which has since been unluckily (sic) misplaced. I will trouble you to send me by mail another copy. The lands are those in the Hardenburgh patent charged to Samuel Verplanck or his heirs or Dan'l G. Verplanck (not those of Gulian Verplanck or his heirs). I shall send you a tariff pamphlet of my own special views in a day or two. Our election is likely to be very harmonious, except perhaps a local Ninth ward quarrel about Arnold, which we also tried to avert.
I am yours.
G. C. Verplanck

The Hardenburgh Patent was a large tract of land (approximately two million acres) in Ulster, Greene, Orange, Sullivan and Delaware Counties, New York, purchased in 1707 from Native Americans for 60 Pounds. The original 7 parcels were further subdivided in 1749, and Daniel Verplanck (G.C. Verplanck's father) became an owner of 3/16 of the property. [www.Hardenburgh.org]

Gulian Crommelin Verplanck (1786-1870) was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee at this point in his career. Silas Wright Jr. was Comptroller of New York State, and was to be a future Senator and Governor of New York State. Verplanck was a resident of Beacon NY and is buried in Trinity Church Cemetery in Fishkill, NY.
