Capture of Fort Sumter, in Rockingham Register and Advertiser. Newspaper.
Harrisonburg, VA: April 12, 1861. A lengthy front page article in a Virginia newspaper on the continuing occupation of Fort Sumpter (sic) by Major Robert Anderson, in which the author states that "those in authority in Charleston" surmise that "the fortress will never be given up until Anderson is starved or shelled out".
The article is under the heading "Letters From the South", by the Special Correspondent of the Register. From the Confederated States of America. Mills House, Charleston, CSA, Monday, March 25, 1861", and is signed "Frederick". The author notes that the "daily supply of eatables" continues, since "we suffer no inconvenience by his [Anderson's] position among us". In two columns, a total of 30 column inches.
This issue was printed on the same day that the decision was taken to attack the Fort and fire on Anderson: on April 12, 1861, Confederate guns around the harbor opened fire on Fort Sumter. On April 13th, Major Anderson surrendered the fort, marking the official beginning of the Civil War.
