Kowaliga School for Colored Youth, charity appeal to a Garrison NY resident.

Kowaglia, Alabama: 1912. A heartfelt letter from the treasurer William E. Benson, to Miss C. Livingston of Manitou (Garrison) NY appealing for funds.

The letter speaks of the remote rural community where "one thousand colored men, women and children (are) 'leveling up' by means of the school-life. In the last paragraph, Benson states that his father was an ex-slave and started the school forty years ago.

Some of the trustees are Clarence Kelsey of Guarantee & Trust Co, NYC; Oswald Garrison Villard, the NY Evening Post; the Rev. Floyd W. Tomkins of Holy Trinity in Philadelphia, Mrs. Isabel Barrows of Croton-on-Hudson and John J. Benson of Kowaliga, presumably the writer's father and founder of the school.

Typescript, signed on school letterhead. 8 1/2 x 11". Period folds otherwise very good condition. Item #25706
