The First Touch. Rugby memorabilia woven in pure silk, stevengraph.

Coventry, England: Stevengraph Works, Ca. 1870. An astonishingly detailed and intricately embroidered silk rugby piece, depicting a player, ball tucked under his arm, streaking to the goal at the left, leaving the opposing team literally in the dust. The players are dressed in breeches and caps, the team about to score in yellow shirts and the other in blue shirts.

Woven in silk and mounted on a period mount with title stamped in gilt below the silk piece. Printed advertisement for Thomas Stevens on verso; part of the original printing on verso has been obscured by some brown paper. In a black and gilt wood frame. The stevengraph 6 x 2"; the frame 9 x 6". OCLC: 948346169 records only one copy, at Harvard. Very good condition. Item #25727
