New York: Harper & Brothers, 1864. Second edition. Hardcover. The author’s only book. The English born Vaux published the work shortly after the death of his partner Andrew J. Downing. Most of the designs are of Hudson River houses, predominantly Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Staatsburgh, New Windsor and Yonkers.
The 39 architectural designs included are for a variety of suburban and rural villas, houses, and cottages; the ones done with Downing are marked D. & V.; the others are marked V. & W., for designs with his partner, F. C. Withers. The name of the property owner is given, along with the cost and sometimes a detailed breakdown.
Many attractive vignette illustrations show the finished building and the ground plan, with details of particular features. The color plate at the end entitled, ‘Specimens of Tiles for Floors, For Sale by Miller and Coates’.
