This is the second of 3 volumes of a rare set of historical views of old New York City. Samuel Hollyer (1826 -1919) was trained as an engraver in England; he came to America in 1851 and worked in New York for 9 years before returning home. Hollyer is noted for The Old New York views, recording sites and scenes which mostly no longer existed at the time of publication.
Oblong 4to, 45 signed engraved plates, each signed by hand in pencil by S. Hollyer. Printed on fine china paper impressed onto a sheet of wove paper. With a few pencil annotations. Bound by H. Blackwell in period dark green gilt morocco with gilt inner dentelles and marbled end papers. Two Hollyer advertising pieces loosely inserted. Very good + condition, plates very bright and clean.
