New York: September 22, 1849. The Chinese sampan or ferry boat system, described by an American observer in China as vital river transportation deftly managed and performed by women. The 9 column inch article describes the "always cheerful, busy and contented" demeanor of the women who operate the sampans in Canton, and gives a detailed account of their daily lives.
