Pine Apple Chop, Extra Choicest Formosa Ooloong. No. Tait & Co.

ca. 1870. Wonderful woodcut pineapple illustration on large tea crate label, from one of the first European trading firms to establish itself in Taiwan following the Treaty of Tianjin of 1858. Founded in 1867 in the port city of Anping, the British firm Tait & Co. dealt in tea, camphor, opium, banking and insurance. Tait prospered in its first 30 years in Taiwan; eventually the Japanese government took over all trade in Taiwan, and the Tait building was converted to a salt works. The Tait & Co. building is a museum today, and one of only 2 merchant houses of the nineteenth century still remaining on Taiwan. Also on the museum property is what is known as the "Anping Treehouse', the original Tait & Co warehouse. With text on label printed in purple and red, and the pineapple in yellow, orange and green. 12 3/4 x 14" Very good condition. Item #26493
