New York: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1875. Cabinet Edition. Hardcover. A handsomely illustrated & bound edition of collected works by Irving, with only one copy recorded on OCLC. It is extensively illustrated "with 120 engravings on Wood, from Original Designs." Artists include John W. Casilear, Seymour Guy, Emanuel Leutze, F. O. C. Darley, Charles Parsons, John M'Lenan, William Hart, Augustus Hoppin, Daniel Huntington, Albert F. Bellows, F. A. Chapman, and others. The wood engravers are Richardson and Cox.

Stories include Rip Van Winkle, the Christmas stories, The Spectre Bridegroom, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Philip of Pokanoket (of King Philip's War"), London Antiques, Stratford-on-Avon, etc. The first appearance of Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (one of America's first ghost stories), was in The Sketch Book, which was first published when Irving was living in England, in 1819.

4to, 24cm, 504pp, illustrated half-title, frontispiece portrait of Irving, decorative title page illustrating Sunnyside, Irving's home, the Hudson River in the background & illustrations in text. Original full dark green morocco, boards and spine in six compartments, gilt decorated, boards with a diamond shaped decoration, gilt & black rules & decoration, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. OCLC: 1005588729 cites one copy at the Univ. of Pennsylvania.

A wonderful copy, internally pristine with only the most minor of rubbing. Very good condition. Item #26747
