Downing lived in Newburgh on the Hudson River, and many of his designs were done with the Hudson River area in mind. Downing died in the fire of the Hudson riverboat The Henry Clay in 1852 at the early age of 36, even then recognized as the foremost landscape designer of America.

8vo, xv, 576 pp, engraved frontispiece portrait and b&w steel engraved plates, with woodcut text illustrations throughout. Green gilt decorated covers, with gilt title at spine. Spine ends rubbed, a few rubberstamps, "Paul Whitney Rhoades 1924" on prelim. Very good overall. Item #26914
