London: Vanity Fair, 1872. First printing. Print. A caricature of Ulysses S. Grant published in Vanity Fair, the famous London weekly renowned for their satirical caricatures of the famous. President Grant was born in 1822 in Ohio, entered West Point at the age of 17 and was appointed Commander in Chief of all Northern troops in the Civil War by Abraham Lincoln in 1854. Grant went on to be elected president in 1869 and again in 1872 when this portrait was published.
