New York: Doubleday, Page & Company, 1901. First edition. Hardcover. Volume 1: Narrative, Glaciers, Natives by John Burroughs, John Muir and George Bird Grinnell. Volume 2: History, Geography, Resources by William H. Dall, et al. Edward Harriman was one of the most powerful men in America and controlled several railroads. By early 1899, he was exhausted. His doctor told him that he needed a long vacation. Harriman went to Alaska to hunt Kodiak bears. Rather than go alone, he took a scientific community to explore and document the coast of Alaska. He took 128 people on the expedition, including his family and his doctor. Notables include John Muir, the naturalist instrumental in the push for establishing the National Parks; John Burroughs, a best-selling nature author active in the conservation movement, and the official scribe of the expedition; Clinton Hart Merriam, the head of the Division of Economic Ornithology and Mammalogy at the United States Department of Agriculture, and one of the founders of the National Geographic Society, head of the expedition and zoologist; Grove Karla Gilbert, a geologist whose work on glaciers represented new thinking in the field; Edward Curtis, photographer, whose friendship with George Grinnell (an expert on Native American culture) lead to Curtis spending much of his career documenting Native American culture; Frank Dellenbaugh, artist who documented the Grand Canyon region; Louis Agassiz Fuertes, bird artist, the artist of the exquisite dioramas at the American Museum of Natural History.
