A General Map of the World or Terraqueous Globe.
London: Laurie & Whittle, 53 Fleet St. 12th May 1799. Maps. The 1799 edition of this imposing, double hemisphere world map, one of the earliest to include the correctly mapped area of Bass Strait, separating Tasmania from the mainland. The double hemisphere is completely surrounded with detailed scientific calculations and descriptions that include, Northern and Southern hemisphere star charts, a selenographic map of the Moon, an astronomical latitude and longitude Analemma, along with Jupiter, Mars and Venus, a map of the Solar System, a Mercator projection of the world, a seasonal chart, a universal scale chart, an Analemma projection and numerous smaller diagrams depicting mathematical systems. In total, there are 15 inserts around the edge.
The mapping of Australia is particularly important in this edition. Additional coastal detail is supplied for every Australian coast. The New South Wales coast & inland names include Port Jackson, Pt. Hicks (on mainland), Bass's Straits, Furneaux I., Banks Straits, St. Patricks Head, Oyster Bay, Adventure Bay (into Derwent River), Pt. St. Vincent, Hunter's I. (in Bass Strait) & Wilson's Promontory. The South Cape and Van Diemens Land are reengraved from the 1787 edition. The size of the Gulf of Carpentaria is reduced, and additions are Great I.; "Crocodiles I." in North Arnhem Land; New Years I. On the West Coast, "Great Bay" appears at Cape Naturaliste; K. George III Land 1791; K. George the III Sound; Termination I.; D'Entrecasteaux Is.
Vancouver's discoveries are marked up the West coast of North America, including Monterey, Port St. Francis Drake, New Albion, Ft. Diego. On the Eastern coast, we find a fledgling United States extending from Georgia to Maine. Dunn names Boston, New York, Long Island, Philadelphia, Washington, Edenton, Jamestown, Richmond, Columbia and Savannah.
