New York: Harper & Brothers, 1885. First edition. Hardcover. Samuel Tilden [1814 - 1886] was an American lawyer and politician, eventually becoming Governor of the State of New York, and a candidate for President in a controversial election in 1876. Bigelow [1817 - 1911] was a close friend and colleague to Tilden. He was American Consul to Paris under Lincoln, then Secretary of the State of New York while Tilden was Governor and became Tilden's campaign manager during his Presidential run.
Later, Bigelow became the first President of the New York Public Library, which was established partially through Tilden's will.

Two vols., 8vo, original brown cloth with paper title labels on spines, teg, xviii, 606pp, (5) 601pp, 6pp ads. Spine tips rubbed, labels rubbed, vol. 2 cover evidence of damp, internally clean. Very good condition. Item #27469
