Jocodus Hondius the Elder (1563-1612) was a prominent geographer and engraver of his time. His work established Amsterdam as the center of cartographic publishing in the 17th century. Seeking religious freedom, he fled to London in 1584, later returning to Amsterdam, but maintaining ties with English mapmakers such as John Speed.
