This engraving is part of a series of views that were produced by Thomas Pownal, a British statesman and talented amateur artist who traveled extensively in the colonies. When his initial job as private secretary to Sir Danvers Osborne ended, Pownal was appointed Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey in 1755, and then served as Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay from 1757-60
The large format engraved views were either drawn by himself or by officers of the British Navy and Army. Initially, the prints were sold individually or as small groups or parts. Later, it was issued and sold as a set, of twenty-eight prints. This print bears the imprint “Sketch’d on the Spot by his Excellency Governor Pownal. Painted & Engraved by Paul Sandby. Framed in an older frame with the Kennedy Galleries stock label on verso. Very good overall. Item #27857
