George W. Reed, carte de visite.
Signed photograph of George W. Reed, 1st Lieutenant, Co I, 27th Regiment, Ind. Vol. Reed posing in a Civil War uniform with saber, and a small side table to his left.
George W. Reed is likely to be the single, 23 year old who enrolled in Madison, Jefferson, Indiana in July 1863. It is indicated he had previous military experience. This would match the soldier listed on the NPS Roll of Soldiers with the same name, rank and regiment from Indiana, who was a 1st Lieutenant entering and leaving the Civil War. (Film Number: M540 ROLL 6).
The 27th Regiment Indiana Infantry was heavily involved in many battles- in 1862, they fought at Mississippi Flotilla, Winchester, VA, Cedar Mountain, VA, Antietam, MD. In 1863, they fought at Chancellorsville, VA, f on July 2nd & 3rd at Gettysburg. In 1864, they fought at Resaca, GA, Dallas, GA, Peach Tree Creek, GA & Atlanta, GA.
