Michener's first novel, based on his experiences in the US Navy in the Pacific theater during W.W.II. After winning the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1948, it was loosely adapted the following year as the Broadway musical, "South Pacific." Notably, the book decried racism towards Asian and African Americans.
