Bridge over the Canal of Alexandria.

Bridge over the Canal of Alexandria has travellers crossing the bridge on foot, by horseback, and camels carrying large bundles, with Pompey's Pillar in the background. A print from "Views in Palestine, from the Original Drawings of Luigi Mayer, with an Historical and Descriptive Account of the Country and Its Remarkable Places".

Mayer [1755–1803] was an Italian-German artist and one of the earliest and most important late 18th-century European painters of the Ottoman Empire. His "Views in Palestine" were made into aquatints with the help of T. Milton.

Aquatint with plate mark 15 1/4 x 12", on paper 18 x 12 3/4", one mark in top margin not affecting image, 1" loss of left margin outside of platemark, otherwise very good condition with delicate color and detail. Item #28353
