Item #4363 Babes in the Bush. Rolf Boldrewood, Thomas Alexander Browne.
Babes in the Bush.

Babes in the Bush.

London: Macmillan, 1900. Wraps. Macmillan's Colonial Library paperback, with a blind stamp "PRESENTATION COPY" on the title page. Who this was presented to, or why this edition would be presented to anyone is a mystery. "Macmillan's Colonial Library was launched on 1 March 1886; ... apparently launched at the personal instigation of Maurice Macmillan following his honeymoon tour of India, Australia and New Zealand in 1884-5." (Spiers (ed.) "The Culture of the Publisher's Series, Volume Two" in Springer online. Macmillans and many other reprint publishers provided much wider access to the reading public in the British Colonies. This work by Boldrewood, first published in 1877, preceded his famous "Robbery Under Arms" by 5 years. 8vo, viii, 420 pp, 7 pp advertisements. Prelims and adverts foxed but title page through to the end of the text very good. Tan printed paper wrappers with brown lettering on cover and spine, with "Macmillan's Two-Shilling Library" on the back cover. The wrappers laid on thicker paper, the spine laid onto cloth. The covers quite marked with some lifting on the lower left front wrapper; the spine ruffled, darkened and waterstained; the back wrapper detached. A very nice representation of a Colonial Library paperback, with only the spine as a detraction. Good condition. Item #4363
