Polo Austral O Meridionale & Antarctico.
The map for the South Pole for the 45" terrestrial globe from Coronelli's "Libro Dei Globi", published in Venice 1697. 14" diameter, copper engraving, central fold strengthened. Prior to all sightings, the map shows no suggestion of the Antarctic continent. Going against common practice of the day, Coronelli was fastidious in only plotting that which had been discovered. Extremely attractive cartouche of two men discussing a globe with a lion & serpent. Extensive annotations on the perimeter in Italian. The cartouche connects with the West coast section of the Australian Coronelli gore. Not in Spence. Item #455
