"A Lost Art". Original pen sketch of an emu and a cow dressed as women in Victorian dress.

New York: Ca. 1875. An anthropomorphized cow is illustrated as a draper selling fabric to the emu. Signed in ink in the picture "Hopkins", the "kins" whited out suggesting this was painted early in his career. Publisher's annotations and title at bottom. Stamped on verso "Scribner and Co, N.Y." Livingston Hopkins (1846-1927) was a New York illustrator and cartoonist who began his career in the US and then became a major Australian success with the Bulletin. Hopkins contributed to publications such as "Wild Oats" and "Harpers" in the 1870s. He also illustrated books such as Don Quixote, Gulliver's Travels, Baron Munchausen, and he wrote and illustrated "A Comic History of the United States" 1877. In 1883 Hopkins went to Australia where he worked for the Sydney 'Bulletin' helping to build its reputation with his clever illustrations, such as the "Little Boy from Manly" his personification of New South Wales, which he created in 1885. Hopkins spent the rest of his life in Sydney. 7 x 5 1/2" image size. Very good condition. Item #5258
