Memoirs of Major Robert Stobo, of the Virginia Regiment.

Pittsburgh: John S. Davidson, 1854. First American edition. Hardcover. Memoirs of Stobo, a Scott who emigrated to Virginia, and considered by some as the "first American Hero. "During the French War Major Stobo was delivered up to the French for the faithful performance of a treaty entered into between Washington and the French, at the fall of Fort Necessity. He was removed to Quebec, where he remained a prisoner until about 1758, when he made his escape. In 1759 he returned to Quebec with Wolfe, and claimed to have furnished him with the information which enabled him to make an effective landing on the 13th of September of that year." (Church). This is the "first American edition, and best edition [the only one with the map], edited by N.B. Craig. Interesting memoir of Indian fights, his campaigns against the French, and his captivity and two escapes from Fort DuQuesne." (Present day Pittsburgh.) Jenkins calls the map "superb." We once had the privilege to handle a small archive including an autograph letter from George Washington to Stobo concerning the survey of 9,000 acres of land on the Ohio River and related correspondence.
