Item #8050 The Village Queen or Summer in the Country. With water-colour drawings by Edward Wehnert, John Absolon, William Lee and Harrison Weir. Thomas. Leighton Brothers Miller.

The Village Queen or Summer in the Country. With water-colour drawings by Edward Wehnert, John Absolon, William Lee and Harrison Weir.

London: Addey & Co., 1852. Hardcover. "Leighton Brothers, at the Great Exhibition, exhibited on Cundall's stand certain coloured prints they had produced, and these, in 1852, were published in book form and called the Village Queen." Courtney Lewis, p.52.

The Illustrated London News thought them superior to George Baxter's entries in the Great Exhibition. "How Leighton and Crewe and Harrison Weir would chuckle over the idea of Baxter's inartistic entries... of his bad drawing, and that Leighton's imitations of water -colour drawings ranked much higher as works of art than Baxter's oil colour printing." (ibid. pp 780-79).

INCLUDES the original issue of the Art Journal review of this book for 1851 is loosely inserted at the back, finding these far superior to Mr. Baxter's process of printing in oil colors.
