Matthews, while on the Discovery committee, worked on whale biology in South Georgia. He travelled there in the autumn of 1924 to establish a marine laboratory and eventually wrote his major monographs on humpback, sei, right, and sperm whales, published in Discovery reports. South Georgia, first book, remains the definitive text. Item #8276
