Bank of Pennsylvania, South Second Street. PhiladelphiaSD.
Philadelphia: William Birch, 1804. Second edition. Print. When this engraving was first issued in 1800, William Birch's prints of Philadelphia formed the 1st series of views of any American city and as such, they are of great historical importance. The engraving nicely suggests a charming view of Philadelphia life, including a small boy playing with dogs at the entrance. The building itself was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe, the important artist and inventor based in Baltimore. It was considered the first true Greek revival building in America. The Bank was completed in 1801 but was demolished in 1867. This copy is a 2nd edition with a closer view of the bank than was issued in the 1800 edition. A 3rd edition was published in 1809. The view measures 11 x 9 1/2" & with extra margins. The paper is watermarked with "AMIES" , indicating a period copy of the image, according to the Library Company of Philadelphia catalog record. Very good condition. Item #10409
