London: Boy's Own Paper Office, 1889. Hardcover. With the 1st English publication of the story by Verne "Adrift in the Pacific" and "A Marvellous Conquest; A Story of the Bayouda" by Laurie. The Boy's Own Annual is a rather splendid production with woodcuts and attractive chromolitho plates throughout. Some of the boys' papers were early publishers of authors who went on to fame like Upton Sinclair. According to the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (online post August 11, 2018), W.S. Hayward's novel "Up n the Air and Down in the Sea" was serialized 1863-1865. Laurie's book was published in 1888 and the translation serialized a year later in this volume. Chromolithographs of Lions (folding) - damaged, The Queen's Barber (British Navy), Our Leading Football Players 1888, An Arctic Exploration (painting by JT Nettleship of a polar bear scavenging on the wreck of the HMS Victory), Our Leading Athletes, Lions, A Man of Bethlehem, Elephants, and b&w illus throughout. The volume includes a chromolithograph at page 209 entitled "An Arctic Exploration". Quarter dark blue leather and cloth cover with decorative blue leather spine. Marbled endpapers, with small binder's label (for the Excelsior Bindings) inside front cover. All edges are marbled. Very good condition. Item #11301
