Original pencil sketch fully signed by Cruikshank, dated Sept. 8th 1855. The drawing of the Scottish castle is delicately sketched, with the castle visible at the top of the ancient volcanic plug known as Dumbarton Rock. Dumbarton Castle has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Great Britain, dating back to the late fifth century. The masts of ships on the River Clyde are visible in the foreground. Image size 36.5 x 25.5 cm. Verso has a sketch of "My system of ventilation", with numbered items, and a note "air passing over the ceiling" written at the upper right. George Cruikshank (1792 - 1878) was an internationally renowned English caricaturist and book illustrator, who was England's most popular satirist. Known for his illustrations in the works of Charles Dickens, especially those in Oliver Twist, and for his impartial political satires of Tories, Whigs and Radicals. Item #13976
