Welsh joined in 1791, and became General Officer Commanding of the Northern Division, Waltair, Madras from 1837-1847. The East India Company initially traded in goods such as cotton, silk, tea, and opium; it eventually ruled large areas of India, exercising military power and assuming an administrative role. Inscribed by the author at the half title of Vol I "To Patrick Stewart, Esq, with the author's kind regards. July 1836".

8vo, two volumes. Volume I: 354pp, all edges marbled, 42 plates. Vol I with bookplate of John Sheepshanks inside front cover. Vol II: 347pp, all edges marbled, 91 plates. Full leather with gilt titles at black spine labels. Front and back boards of Vol I detached, and spines of both volumes rubbed and chipped, with Vol I missing most of title label, Vol II lacking top 2 inches spine, needs re-backing, good +.
