The story of a British surgeon called for foreign service in June of 1915 in the Dardanelles, who served as a consulting surgeon to the Mediterranean and Egyptian Expeditionary Forces. Topics include his call & departure, duties & problems, Mudros and Gallipoli, the Crisis of the Campaign, Egypt, Cairo in War Time, The Welfare of the Fighting Man, Alexandria, Colonel Sandwith and Other Workers, Dental and Surgical, From Khartoum to Gaza, the Palestine Front, and the Triumph of the Eighth Crusade. Captain R.B. Campion has annotated the book and it contains many personal photographs and letters pertaining to his own service in the war. Examples include: a letter on War Office letterhead to Campion from Major General H. Quinlan, dated 1962, inquiring about dental officers in the war; a chart at the front titled 'Return of Work, July 1916/ April 1919', listing dental work performed and signed by Campion and stamped 'The Dental Annexe, Alexandria' and a second Army form at the rear, 'An Account of Lodging for the month of Feb 1919 for Capt. R. B. Campion, serving with the Dental Annexe, Cairo'; a b&w photo at the title page titled 'Capt R B Campion's Jaw Ward, Alex, Egypt, 1916'; a two page letter to Campion from Douglas Wain, dated 1967 pertaining to dental school and the names of men he served with; and numerous other photos laid down throughout the book, with handwritten commentary. 8vo, frontis portrait, xiii, 279pp, b&w ills throughout.
