Germany: ca. 1860. French children's block puzzle with scenes of life from countries around the world on 5 separate illustrated sheets; the puzzle itself on illustrated blocks, which must be rotated to assemble the scenes illustrated on each of the sheets. Produced in France around 1860, with French title at top of box cover and French subtitles on each illustration. In its original wooden box with color illustration to front cover laid down, and 'Au Printemps, Roanne' at underside of box. The box cover illustration depicts a Polynesian waterfront scene with two tattooed women ("Femmes Indigenes Tatouees") conversing with a man holding a paddle who gestures towards an outrigger canoe. Cover illustration signed 'H. Lentemann' (possibly Leitemann) at the lower right. The 5 illustrated scenes inside the box include: 'Australiens', 'Hottentots et Boschimans', 'Hindous', 'Papous', and 'Nubiens'. Each scene with subtitle below each animal depicted; 'Australiens' shows Aborigines carrying a freshly killed kangaroo toward a lean to dwelling, with the subtitles 'Boomerang, Bouclier, Lances, Kangourou, Ornithorynque (platypus), Dingos, Talegalle, Panier en jonc'. The dimensions of the wooden box are 14 x 10 3/4 x 2 1/4 in. Illustrated scenes inside box slt dusty, tears to edges. Box illustration dusty & rubbed; puzzle blocks themselves very good, colors bright and fresh. Item #14756
