"The Departure, Second Class Car" and "The Return, First Class Car" appearing in Godey's Lady's Book 1859.

The monthly issue for December 1859, with the classic Australian two full page steel engravings of the famous railway scenes, 'The Departure, Second Class Car' and 'The Return, First Class Car' depicting a young man leaving to make his fortune in the Australian gold fields, with advertising for ships departing to 'Port Phillip' and 'Sydney' visible on the wall behind his head. Here they appear re-engraved in a smaller format by an unknown artist. Originally published in elephant folio size in London, this would be the first US publication.
Godey's magazine covered a range of topics from literature, music, furniture, fiction, costume, gardening & contemporary events. Individual issue, Vol. LIX, December 1859. Orig. pp paper wraps, black titles, covers ruffled at edges & rear cover detached. Not found on Trove (digital edition only is available). Good + overall. Item #14778
