Orbis Descriptio.

Venice: Girolamo Ruscelli, 1561. First edition, first state. The first appearance of a double hemispherical map of the world to appear in an atlas. With 'Terra Florida' and 'Galicia Nova' on North America, and a large land mass connecting it to Asia labeled 'Terra Incognita' and its coastline as "Littus incognitum". The south coast of Java is left to the imagination and there is no land mass suggested at the south pole. Uncolored copper engraved map. Image size: 10 x 7 1/2". Paper size: 12 1/4 x 9 1/8". One very small chip at bottom of center fold; small toned spot, otherwise very good. Shirley, R.W. (World) 110 referencing Nordenskiold, pp. 26 & 94 and plate XLV (1); Wagner 54. Item #15906
