Signed declaration of the appointment of Garrit H. Striker Esquire to the office of Lieutenant Colonel, by the then governor of the state of New York, DeWitt Clinton. Garrit Striker was the descendant of Dutch settlers (Strijker) in New York, who established a mansion at Striker's Bay. During the war of 1812 Striker served as Captain of the 4th Company in the 5th Regiment of Volunteers and worked on the fortifying of Bloomingdale Heights; he ultimately attained the rank of Major General. DeWitt Clinton, the sixth governor of the state of New York, is noted for his role in the construction of the Erie Canal. 12 1/2 x 8 1/2". Matted with gilt border; in gilt frame 19 x 15 3/4" Fine.
