ca. 1895. Painting. Shute was a well known illustrator from Brookline Mass. who worked for Stratemeyer until his death in 1906.
This is a gouache (on stiff board) illustration in shades of black and white, depicting Native Americans in canoes approaching Henry Hudson's Half Moon. Signed at the left, A. B. S., and with two spaces at the lower left and upper right, and marked mortise in pencil.
