1929. The inscription on verso of this photo of three unidentified men and a woman reads "Rabaul 1929 Sept." Rabaul is a township in East New Britain province, Papua New Guinea. At the time the township was the capital of the Australian-mandated Territory of New Guinea. The photograph was taken about nine months after the Rabaul police strike, when on January 2 some 200 police officers and 3,000 workers to walk off the job, demanding better pay. The strike ended quickly but on January 4 the whites in town formed the New Guinea Citizens' Assocation and demanded that missionaries be deported, senior police officers be fired and employers be allowed to flog insubordinate workers.
