1881-82. Extract from the Proceedings of the Royal Colonial Institute, Seventh Ordinary General Meeting, 9th May, 1882. With information on the territory, including the history of the first European crossing of the continent from Adelaide to Van Diemen Gulf by McDouall Stuart only 20 years earlier. Further information on climate, railway & other communication, resources, gold, plantations, coolie labour, pastoral land, towns and future of the territory; followed by the discussion section, in which members comment upon the presentation. The chairman, Earl of Dunraven, comments at the conclusion of the discussion, ""I have been amazed and fascinated by the way in which speaker after speaker talks of the various products of the country. They spoke about any quantity of gold, as if gold was quite a common thing, that could be picked up anywhere. (Laughter). And they talk of hundreds of thousands of acres of land rented at half-a-crown a square mile. What a paradise that must be for people who think they pay too much for land at home!" 35 pages, p299 - 338. Small 8vo, in blue paper wrappers; handwritten title at front cover. Very good condition.
